New Year's Resolutions for Business

New Year’s Resolutions – Business Edition

January 2, 2024 12:37 pm

The new year is upon us and what better time is there to set a few goals or resolutions for your business? From aiming to be more organized, proactive, and focused on long-term goals to vowing to get better at technology, refine your brand or provide more employee incentives, now is the time to have a fresh start.

Many individuals and businesses see the start of the new year as a clean slate; “tabula rasa” for those Latin scholars out there. It’s a great time to review what has worked in the past year and what needs some improvement. Here are a few suggestions for business leaders to consider as they enter 2024.

Set & Track New Goals

Each year, business leaders should meet with their teams and come up with new goals, both short- and long-term that can help push them towards the main mission of the company. Brainstorming realistic and measurable goals can help team members understand their role in the overall running of the business.

If larger goals are too overwhelming, break them down into smaller parts and assign check-in times when team members can report how progress is going or not going. It’s also important to track progress throughout the year to celebrate small victories and larger accomplishments along the way.

One thing to consider when setting these goals is how you will measure what success looks like. How will you and your team determine if an objective has been met? Set out how each goal will be measured so that everyone is on the same page and understands the goal from all sides.

Get Better At Technology

The pandemic taught us that we need to be adept at handling change, especially change in the technological areas of our business. If technology is a sticking point for your businesses, this may be a great resolution to consider for the coming year.

Not only does technology play a major role in most businesses’ e-commerce abilities but for many companies, employees are working remotely. This makes it critical that everyone understands the technology.

If getting better at technology is one of your organization’s goals, consider regular training for employees and leadership as both refreshers and to introduce new information that will help in the future. piggy bank savings

Provide Employee Incentives

It takes more time and energy to hire and train a new employee than it does to retain a great employee. Be sure to review your employee incentives at your organization this year.

From year-end bonuses to ways to “call out” great work during less formal times, employees need to know they are valued and respected for the work they are doing. Create multiple ways to incentivize your team members throughout the year.

Refine Your Brand

Your brand name, tagline, colors and logo may be in excellent shape, but are you sure you are using it in as many ways as possible? Review and refine your brand by looking across your social media channels for inconsistencies and by checking protocols that support your brand style to ensure you are consistent in all areas.

What are your organization’s New Year’s Resolutions? Each goal should be measurable, realistic, and attainable. Good luck and Happy New Year from Enterprise Center at Salem State University.
