As states around the U.S. aim to meet their future energy needs while combatting climate change, many are turning to offshore wind. The industry is just getting started, but states have made their demand clear, and activity is set to explode in the coming years.

Offshore wind projects consist of multiple massive wind turbines — some more than 400 feet in height, with blades the length of a football field — that are anchored to the seabed. These turbines capture the energy of the wind and convert it into electricity through rotating blades connected to a generator. This electricity is then transmitted to shore and integrated into the power grid that powers homes, businesses, and communities. In some parts of the world where the ocean floor is too deep to anchor the turbine, new technology has allowed for the development and installation of floating turbines.

The development, construction, and maintenance of offshore wind projects create a range of contract and supply chain opportunities as well as job opportunities, from engineers and technicians to support staff and local suppliers. Building offshore wind projects in the U.S. is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalize communities, create well-paying jobs, and jumpstart businesses that will benefit neighborhoods across the country.

If you think your company or organization may have a place in the offshore wind industry, attend the upcoming Offshore Wind Ready Workshop being held by the North Shore Alliance for Economic Development in partnership with Oceantic Network on June 4, 2024, from 10am to 4pm at the Enterprise Center-  121 Loring Avenue, Salem, MA.  The workshop is free to attend but registration is required.
