In this workshop, we will look at how to assess your strengths and your transferable competencies by answering the question:  What skills do I have today that will carry forward to my next employment and what skills do I still need to develop?

We will:

look at the Big Seven Skills Gap in the workplace today: Teamwork, Communication, Analytic Thinking, Creativity, Agility, Organization, Cultural Awareness (Committee for Economic Development). We will discuss how to do a personal assessment of these skills and others and how you can prepare to develop the skills in most demand.

Second, create a career strategy by considering the kind of positions or roles would you like to fill in the next five years.

Third, research these target positions and check out the job requirements to find the needed skills, experience, and training. Finally, ask what you need to do now to be ready for your target job and career goal.

We will also offer tips on building your career through seeking out and creating powerful and effective relationships within your personal network.  Some of these tips include identifying thought leaders and visionaries in your industry and following them. You may routinely and intentionally find people you respect and can serve as accountability partners including mentors who will challenge you and champion you on your career path. Learn to be selective in your networking activities so there is time to establish real relationships and genuinely demonstrate your value to select members in your network. Use social media wisely. According to Steve Jobs, Innovation has nothing to do with how many R & D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R & D. It’s not about money. It’s about the people you have, how you’re led, and how much you get it.

Massachusetts was recently ranked second (after California) as the most innovative state in the United States, according to the Bloomberg US State Innovation Index.

Creative thinking is the foundation for innovation; innovation is the process that transforms creative ideas into products, services, and processes.  We want to cultivate the ability to imagine and generate new ideas with enough speed and agility to successfully implement them in our new complex and matrixed marketplace. Think about what problems your customers are trying to solve.  How might you help them find new answers to old problems? There is no such thing as a perfect plan.  Assume that your first idea is partially right and partially wrong, then go out and learn and reassess your approach. This course examines ways we can build a productive dialogue in both our day to day interactions and formal negotiations.

At its core, understanding and applying negotiation principles help us communicate constructively, create a positive frame of reference, and help open up as many options as possible.  We will learn to create a conversation around designing a complete list of possible options before jumping to what may be premature and insufficient immediate solutions. When people trust each other, they are more likely to communicate accurately their needs, positions, and the facts of the situation.  In contrast, when people do not trust each other, they are more likely to engage in positional bargaining, to use threats, and to commit themselves to tough positions.

This one day, hands-on workshop will help municipalities know what drones can do for municipal work and what you need to know before you fly. The central themes of the workshop are:

  • To learn about the current uses of drones for municipalities
  • To learn about how different departments in government can use drones with special focus on the Department of Public Works and Department of Public Safety
  • To learn about the different drones currently available
  • To learn about the necessary software to fly drones and create imagery
  • To learn about the legal aspects of flying drones and the FAA requirements
  • To learn how to get a Remote Pilot’s license
  • To learn about additional needs, such as insurance
  • To gain hands-on experience on how to set up a drone project, fly the drone, produce final imagery through various software packages.

Part of the day will include lecture and discussion and part of the day will include field work with hands-on exercises. By the end of the workshop you will have all of the information necessary to set up a drone program for your town government.

This workshop will be taught by:

Dr. Stephen Young is a Full Professor of geography and specializes in remote sensing and environmental sustainability. Dr. Young has worked with satellites for over 30 years with over a dozen publications. He has been flying drones and teaching with drones for the past two year and is FAA certified as a Remote Pilot.

Mr. Richard Ames is a GIS professional with over 25 years’ experience in the municipal and private sectors.  In addition to an undergraduate degree in Cartography/GIS from Salem State, Mr. Ames holds a MA in GIS and International Development from Clark University.  Mr. Ames established Natick’s drone program and became an FAA certified pilot in September of 2016.

Sergeant Christos G. Zamakis is a member of the Peabody Police Department and is currently assigned to the Research and Development/Training Division. Sergeant Zamakis has earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Criminal Justice from Salem State, and is currently enrolled in the Geo-Information Science master’s program at Salem State University. In his master’s program Sergeant Zamakis is studying drone use for police departments.
