BLS Provider CPR (1-day Initial or Renewal Course, multiple sessions available)

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest. This course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both in-facility and prehospital settings. This course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills.

In addition, BLS training can be appropriate for first responders, such as police officers and firefighters, as well as for laypeople whose work brings them into contact with members of the public, such as school, fitness center, or hotel and restaurant employees.

Students must pass a written exam and skills test in order to qualify for a BLS Course Completion Card.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a completion cad valid for 2 years.

The Bee School at Salem State University – Queen Rearing Mini-Course

This mini course teaches beekeepers two skill sets necessary in maintaining a sustainable apiary.

SKILL SET 1: Making Increases Through Splits:

In this presentation beekeepers are taught how to increase the number of hives by splitting their existing hives into NUCS which can be later increased into a standard hive.  Both walk away and queen introduced splits are discussed.  Topics include necessary equipment, timing, split development, and NUC management.

SKILL SET 2: Queen Rearing Using Non Grafting Techniques

In this presentation beekeeper are taught how to raise queen honey bees employing non grafting techniques.  All aspects of raising vibrant honey queens are examined including necessary equipment, timing, drone development, mating NUCS, queen banking, and queen introduction.

Course Structure:

The course is divided into two distinctly separate meetings:

Meeting 1: Salem State University – Fall (9/22/16)

This classroom meeting details the equipment, procedures, and manipulations, necessary to execute the two skill sets.

Meeting 2: Black Birch Farm – Spring (Date to be decided)

Students will practice the procedures for making splits and raising queens in an active apiary (appropriate protective clothing is required)

The scheduling of the two meetings is set so students have time over the winter months to acquire and assemble the necessary equipment which will enable them, at the conclusion of Meeting 2, to take what they have learned and put it into immediate practice.

Sustainable Beekeeping at Salem State University is a three-course sequence that can be taken in any combination at $50.00 per course.

Complete all three, and receive a certificate from Salem State University.

Course 1: Sustainable Beekeeping: 6 weeks – $50.00

February 25 to March31 Thursday, 6:30 to 9:00 pm – All necessary equipment, management, and hive manipulations to install and maintain a bee hive from late spring through mid-summer. Course recommended for beginner and intermediate beekeepers.

Course 2: The Sustainable Apiary Summer: 4 weeks – $50.00

June 2 to June 23 Thursdays 6:30 to 9:00pm

Course details summer management practices for the hive. Topics include swarming, identification and interdiction of honey bee predators and diseases. This is a hands-on course as we meet at various apiaries to practice opening and inspecting hives. Students must have bee-veils to participate. Time and location may vary.

Course 3: The Key to Sustainable Beekeeping – Fall and Winter Hive

Management: 4 weeks – $50

August 18 through Sept. 8 Thursdays 6:30 to 9:00 pm – Register NOW!

Necessary fall hive inspections and evaluation, feeding, re-queening, preparing the hive for winter, winter feeding. Also included; how to extract and process honey and bees wax. Time and location may vary.

Note: Course 2 and 3 will include hive openings at local apiaries at mutually beneficial times.

Special Short Course: Making Splits, NUCS, and Raising Queens using Non-Grafting Techniques: 2 day short course – Times to be announced.

NOTE:  The Bee School courses are held at Salem State University, Central Campus, Bertolon Classroom Building.  Courses 2 & 3 are held at local apiaries and times may vary.  You will be issued a parking permit to be displayed at all times on your dashboard.  Parking is located behind the Enterprise Center (121 Loring avenue, Salem, MA for your GPS) in spaces marked “E” only.  100% refund before class begins. No refund after the first class. 

Basic Mediation Training (6 Sessions)

The Basic Mediation Training program provides in-depth coverage of the mediation process and the principles of conflict management through presentations, exercises, discussions and role-plays. The training complies with the MA Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) Uniform Rules on Dispute Resolution and meets the requirements of Mass General Laws, Chapter 233, Section 23C to establish mediator confidentiality.

The training will be conducted by North Shore Community Mediation Center’s Professional, experienced lead trainers and coaches.
