Finding Talented Employees
July 1, 2022 8:44 amAccording to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “The most impacted industries facing staffing shortages are the transportation, health care, and social assistance industries, as well as the accommodation and food sectors, which have had the highest numbers of job openings.”
For the Massachusetts and New England region, areas filled with first-class medical and healthcare facilities as well as a strong tourism industry, this is not good news.
The pandemic didn’t just disrupt our collective health, it caused a major disruption in America’s labor force. Just last year, more than 47 million workers quit their jobs, a phenomenon they are referring to as the Great Resignation. Many of these millions were in search of an improved work-life balance and flexibility, increased compensation, and strong company culture.
If your industry has been impacted by this Great Resignation read on for suggestions on how to find and keep talented employees that will serve your organization for the coming years.
Referrals
Referrals have long been a staple for finding talented and skilled employees. People in your industry often know others who are good at what they do.
If staffing shortages have hit your company especially hard, add an incentive for your employees to recommend people they know to the company. Your current employees may be best at marketing as they can explain the benefits of working at your organization.
Networking
Networking may not look like it used to as many networking groups have gone completely virtual, but the concept is still the same. Reach out to your local networking groups and let them know you are hiring. Be specific in the positions you have available as well as any benefits that you may want to be passed along to potential candidates.
Cultivating your talent pool can be difficult, but the more people in your industry and in industries in your local area can help expand the number and quality of candidates in your inbox.
Career Sites and Job Boards
Now is the time to leverage your online presence. Use job boards and career sites to advertise your current openings and keep track of your potential candidates. Sites such as Indeed, CareerBuilder, ZipRecruiter, Monster, Google Jobs, and LinkedIn are some optimal places to post your organization’s openings. An index by Jobvite shows that an enormous 43 percent of job seekers search for positions using a job board, while 32 percent use career sites.
Social Networks
Think Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter are just for socializing or posting memes? Think again.
Social media is quickly becoming a place to find and hire talented workers. According to a study conducted by Jobvite, “95 percent of companies surveyed said they successfully hired from LinkedIn, while 24 percent pointed to Facebook and 16 percent credited Twitter.”
As you confront the realities of your staffing shortage, remember that using all the tools at your disposal can help you find the right person at the right time.
