Douglas C. Bates, M.S., M.B.A., Chief Business Officer and Co-Founder, Apredica

Mr. Bates is the Chief Business Officer and co-founder of Apredica, a preclinical contract research laboratory launched in 2006. Apredica now has over 115 clients, from every continent except Antarctica. Apredica was funded through bootstrapping and some friends and family investors. He is also Principal of Aderit, an internet marketing consultancy he founded in 2001. Previously he held roles in marketing management for Aquent, Nequity, Signet Bank, Providian, and The Franklin Mint. Mr. Bates holds an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College, an M.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.
Before Apredica launched it was a contestant in the 2006 North of Boston Business Plan Competition, winning first place.

Richard Earl, The Regis Group

During 30 years at six New York Advertising Agencies Richard created advertising for Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Revlon and over 50 national brands, plus a large number of social causes, including the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program, and the famous “Crying Indian” for Keep America Beautiful. He is the author of the book "The Art of Cause Marketing: How to Use Advertising to Change Personal Behavior and Public Policy.” A resident of Gloucester, he currently consults on branding, cause marketing, and advertising evaluation for the Regis Group, Inc.


Eduardo Crespo, CEO of Hispanic Market Solutions

Eduardo Crespo is a bilingual/bicultural professional with over 20 years of national US Hispanic marketing, advertising, PR and business development experience. Increasing awareness about these markets and providing strategic direction, generating new business, creating “out of the box” solutions and compelling campaigns, and connecting brands with the US Hispanic media or directly to the consumer are his core strengths.

Eduardo is the founder and CEO of Hispanic Market Solutions, a Boston (Methuen) company that specializes in helping companies Understand, Reach and Service (URS methodology) the US Hispanic market. This framework has catapulted him to the national spotlight and is a sought after speaker at major national and international conferences such as MIT’s “Doing Business in Latin America”, Kodak World Headquarters’ Keynote Speaker for their Hispanic Heritage Celebration Banquet, Bentley University’s Diversity Symposium Series, City of Medellin’s (Colombia) International Conference in Entrepreneurship.

Peter Gordon, Attorney and Founder, Patent GC

Peter Gordon (pgordon@patentgc.com, 617-756-0199) is a founding member of Patent GC. Peter’s years with premier intellectual property law firms provided him with the opportunity to gain deep expertise in a range of technologies while his significant in-house experience enables him to provide his clients with the kind of practical, real-world guidance sorely lacking in the traditional law firm model. Peter endeavors to help clients optimize the resources they allocate for their intellectual property programs and maximize the value of their intellectual property portfolios. Peter began his legal career in private practice at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C., starting as a technology specialist and ultimately becoming a partner and the head of the firm’s software practice group. While at Wolf Greenfield, Peter developed expertise in a wide range of technologies and industries, such as multimedia systems, computer hardware including fault tolerant systems, object oriented systems and databases, medical devices, internet technologies and business methods. Peter left Wolf Greenfield to join Avid Technology, where he became its Director of Intellectual Property. While at Avid, Peter was responsible for all aspects of Avid’s large international patent portfolio. In addition to managing Avid’s intellectual property assets, Peter established a software licensing policy and process for managing compliance with open source as well as commercial licenses, and developed a patent and technology licensing program for promoting use of a standard video compression technology. He refined its patent review process to focus on the competitive and strategic aspects of the portfolio. After leaving Avid, Peter joined the Boston office of Fish & Richardson, where he continued his work in open source and patent prosecution, especially reexamination practice. Peter is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (in computer science) and Suffolk University Law School.

Kate Victory Hannisian, Owner of Blue Pencil Consulting.

Kate is a writer and editor who helps clients communicate clearly and effectively with their target audiences through written communications that range from books and articles to press releases and blogs. Before starting her own firm, Kate spent 17 years as a journalist writing business-to-business newsletters on a variety of financial and business topics. Kate is a member of the North Shore Business Forum, the North Shore Technology Council, the Creative Economy Association of the North Shore, and the Homebased Businesswomen’s Network. Ari Herzog,Ari Herzog & Associates

Ari Herzog is considered a leading thinker at the intersection of the internet and public policy. An independent management consultant, professional speaker, and writer/editor, he is sought after for his unique perspective as an online media strategist and elected city councilor. Doing business as Ari Herzog & Associates, he provides online media strategies to improve productivity and reduce overhead. David W. Ives- CEO, NiiS, Inc.

Mr. Ives is Chief Executive Officer of Northshore International Insurance Services, Inc. [“NiiS”], an international insurance management and consulting company headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts. He is a recognized leading expert in the insurance industry worldwide. Mr. Ives is also a private equity investor. He has started, organized, sold and acquired businesses and been involved in every part of private equity investing in three active businesses as well as several prior companies. Mr. Ives has been recently been appointed Entrepreneur in Residence at the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State College and Enterprise Center at Salem State College. He has an ongoing involvement as the CEO of NIIS but has taken on this additional responsibility to apply his knowledge to help students and small business owners and growth companies.
Mr. Ives holds a B.S. degree from University of Maine. He is a current member and past president of the Board of Trustees for the Insurance Library Association of Boston; a member of the Society of CPCU including Claims, Risk Management, International Insurance, Reinsurance, and Excess and Surplus Lines sections; former director of the Society of CPCU, Boston Chapter; member of the Self Insurance Institute of America; and International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.


Patrick Kimera, Found KP Performance Solutions, LLC.

Patrick Kimera is a multi-faceted business management professional with over 15 years of executive coaching/management consulting experience. Prior to launching KP Performance Solutions, LLC, Patrick assisted hundreds of small-to-medium size businesses with management advice as a business management consultant at The George S. May Company, a major management consulting firm, based in Chicago, IL. Patrick holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Arts, Economic Development, from the University of Massachusetts.

Robert Lutts, President and Chief Investment Officer for Cabot Money Management

Rob Lutts serves as President and Chief Investment Officer for Cabot Money Management, Inc. He received his MBA degree in investments and finance from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and his bachelor of science degree in finance and management from Babson College. He is head of the company’s Investment Policy Committee and oversees a select group of client accounts. Rob has taken a strong interest in global research, particularly China and India, and emerging markets in general. He is a regular contributor on CNBC, Bloomberg, and FOX Business News. He has also been quoted in leading publications, such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Barron’s.

In addition to his business pursuits, Rob is active in many community organizations, including acting as treasurer of the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, trustee of the Tabernacle Church, member of the Board of Directors of Salem Rotary Club. Rob is an overseer of the North Shore Medical Center Foundation, treasurer of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Salem Trust Funds, and member of the board of Partners Healthcare System Corporation. He is also the president of the Salem State College Foundation as well as a sponsor of Babson College’s Mentor Program and Babson’s Consulting Alliance Program.

Gary Paul Magnant, MS. CEO, Sage Science

Mr. Magnant is Chief Executive Officer of Sage Science which designs and develops instrumentation for research and diagnostic applications for sale under the Sage Science brand. The Company also does contract OEM development and manufacturing. Sage Science's team consists of experienced officers with prior leadership positions in companies such as Owl Scientific & Matrix Technologies (see NYSE:TMO) and MJ Research (see AMEX:BIO). Sage Science is privately-funded. Sage Science is currently headquartered in the former New England Biolabs complex in Beverly, MA, USA.

Prior to Sage Science, Mr. Magnant served as Vice President of MJ Research, a leading manufacturer of thermal cycling instrumentation for DNA research. At MJ he also served as interim CEO of their Genesys Technologies division, a manufacturer of DNA sequencing instrumentation. He was also the founding Chairman and President of Owl Scientific a leading brand of electrophoresis apparatus now owned by Thermo Fisher. Magnant was a co-founding CEO and Chairman of ThermoCeramiX a contract development and manufacturing firm focused on disruptive new electric heating technology currently being deployed in automotive, appliance and other large industries. He is also a co-founder of ActivBiotics a heavily venture-backed pharmaceutical development company. Magnant holds life science degrees from UMASS - Dartmouth and Montana State University.

Sage Science will begin selling a line of molecular auto-analyzers and sample prep instruments (Pippin Prep) in Q4 2009.

Eric Salerno, Founder of Red Ember Marketing and EmberMail.com

Eric Salerno is founder of Red Ember Marketing and EmberMail.com. He brings more than 8 years of sales and marketing experience to small and medium sized businesses to help them convert more website visitors and email contacts into customers. EmberMail users can easily create, test, schedule, and send email marketing campaigns using custom designed templates. Red Ember also provides clients with website design services, pay per click campaign management, landing page optimization, and text message marketing services.

Michael Stauff, Consultant, ESC

Mr. Stauff, an ESC consultant since October 2001, has been involved with non-profit organizations in education, health care, community development and other services, specifically in strategic management and board development efforts. Through his consulting work and his workshop series, Mike has been supporting and educating nonprofit leaders in critical management areas including strategic planning, contingency planning, program evaluation, and board development. In addition to his consulting work with ESC, he serves as ESC’s Board Chair as well as a board member at Julie’s Family Learning Program. Mike is the former Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for TranSwitch Corporation. He has great experience in creating and managing systems and controls necessary to support rapidly growing organizations at both public and private companies. Mike has been involved in growing two successful start-up companies to substantial sizes.

David Thomson, President of Thomson Communications

Thomson Communications a strategic communications firm which specializes in the areas of public relations, marketing consulting and sponsorship and event management. Prior to starting his agency, Thomson spent ten years at Verizon Wireless where he was the Director of Marketing for New England with responsibility for all marketing, promotion, events, and advertising activities throughout a six-state region.
